Ballast systems

Whether you're designing a ship or submarine, ballast systems play an important role in the safe operation.

On submarines the ballast system determines the maximum operating depth. The ability to quantify key design parameters earlier in the design process leads to increased confidence in the final design. Such parameters may include:

  • Optimised storage capacity of the compressed air storage tanks
  • Blow-down time
  • Compressed air storage recharge times

For surface ships such as chemical tankers, oil tankers, cargo ships and cruise ships, the addition of shipboard filtration systems has added more complexity. Flowmaster V7 enables engineers to design and simulate early on in the design process to accurately predict system performance and strike a balance between critical needs and costly over-design.

Scenarios where you could use Flowmaster to meet a design requirement:

  • Accurately predict ballast tank filling and emptying times
  • Optimise pump sizes to achieve system design specifications
  • Predict ballast water treatment plant supply
  • Quantify the length of time for deballasting
  • Develop effective ballast and deballasting control systems
